David Latham's SW20 MR2

Project type

Restoration

Date

01.02.2023

David spent approximately 10 years restoring his MR2. Being a bus driver by trade and having little or no experience of restoring cars and being self taught, he completed the work to the best of his abilities, and a fine job he did we would say when you see the finished pictures. See Davids write up of his project below.

When I got the car it had been sprayed with a can of Matt black and the front bumper was sagging, so as I decided to get a body kit and fit a thicker core radiator on while the bumper was off. I removed the AC pump and radiator, all the body kit is moulded in to the body too. I’ve changed the full ignition system and added a 3.5” exhaust and decat, K&N air filter and a Walbro 255 fuel pump. The foam was removed from the rear quarter panels it causes rot. the car was then prepared for the respray, I had the colour made it’s a Mazda blue with metal flake it also now sits on 17” Wolfrace alloys with new Bilstien shock absorbers. The interior was in good condition to start with so i just removed the gauges the previous owner had installed crudely and installed a new central plastic part of the dash. I moved the blitz boost gauge to the top of the steering column and installed a blitz turbo timer and a touch screen stereo. I have replaced the glass with the later blue tint windows the only thing I have left to do is replace a door handle surround which I have on order and have the driver side bolster refurbished.

The mr2 was always my dream car as I had the poster on my bedroom wall as a young lad.
