Jack Denton's 1993 MR2 mk2
Project type
Modifications
Date

When i bought my 1993 Toyota MR2, it was feeling a little sorry for itself, ECU fried, Alternator broken, ignitor broken, suspension leaky, horrible paintwork.
However, to the previous owners credit, it had a very rare OEM El Glo badge on it, they’d just had new sills & brakes done & also put a nice exhaust on it.
So first things first, getting it running & finding which parts were actually broken.
Thankfully i still had my Subaru Impreza to daily drive whilst this was being fixed.
The alternator & ignitor were easy to source with MR MR2 being just around the corner, however when searching for the ECU, there was only 2 available for sale, thankfully 1 was in the UK, the other over in Lithuania, i snatched the UK one up as soon as i could & got a great price too.
Once the ECU was installed, the MR2 was alive & well, i decided to get a new battery & begin fixing leaks i could find to give it the best chance at survival.
After a while of driving it as it was, i was offered some genuine work wheels for a price i couldn’t refuse, so on they went! The modification bug had bitten…
So i got some fully adjustable BC Racing Coilovers (which also counted as a repair for the leaky shocks).
I’d always wanted a quick release steering wheel & figured having a car that had no airbags anyway, i might as well go for it, so i bought a nice quick release OMP steering wheel to go on.
Next up was a nice sparco shifter gifted to me by my fiancée,
Then a replacement alloy radiator to remedy any overheating issues.
My Starter motor decided to die at a car meet, so a bump start & i’m home ordering a new one.
Went round to a friends for fitting, who then tells me he has some perfectly sized piping to create a custom induction kit for my car, so off we went with that, he lent me a nice cone filter until i bought my oversized Ramair cone filter, the noise difference is amazing!
Now it starts getting more exciting…
I discovered Nigel Smiths shop & got my orders in ASAP, securing an Aeroware front lip, Greddy Side Skirts & a TOM’s Rear Bumper
With it’s nice new bodystyling, the only thing letting it down was the worn out/stained paint, a friend of mine who owned a detailing business agreed & also wanted to move into vehicle customisation, we decided on Gloss Sky Blue by 3M for the colour, it looks amazing.
I started experiencing battery drain issues which were traced back to the anti theft ECU, but not wanting to mess with that for obvious reasons, i got a killswitch/key installed where the cigarette lighter previously was, it works perfectly.
A club i’m in had booked the Sturgate airfield for Japanese cars to run up & down, it was a brilliant day, but my drive shafts disagreed, replaced within a week.
the car was running faultlessly from then on, then on mine & my fiancée’s anniversary, 100 miles from home my clutch suddenly went!
After the pain of recovery back home & 2 weeks off the road waiting for mechanic availability,
A new excedy clutch was installed, we also found out, the clutch in the car, was the original clutch! 30 years & 150,000 miles later. It did well!
Fast forward to today.
The car is alive, running well, daily driven & turning heads every day.
